Green Canyon
I had been looking forward to today’s trip for a long time – it was going to be another boat ride on the water, and swimming stops were planned as well. It doesn’t get any better than that.
We had booked through “Ali’s Excursions” in Avsallar. His offers are significantly cheaper than those of the tour operators but in no way inferior.
We were picked up punctually, and the bus ride took almost two hours through the most beautiful landscapes. We followed the Manavgat River again and again, which carves its way through a narrow valley bordered by rugged hills and forests.
Finally, we reached the destination of our journey: the Green Canyon.
After the construction of a dam, a natural jewel of incredible beauty was created here, surrounded by steep cliffs and lush nature.
We wanted to explore this paradise from the water today.
We had to wait briefly for our boat to arrive, but then off we went.
First, we visited the large canyon, where on the right and left meter-high, rugged cliffs tower over the banks of the green water. It is this colour that gives the canyon its name. It comes from the numerous plants on which the lake was built.
Rarely have I seen such a beautiful gorge.
But it was about to get even better when we entered the small canyon, which is even narrower and steeper.
This route was no longer navigable to the end; only small boats can venture further.
For almost two hours, we enjoyed this breathtaking scenery.
Then we returned to the lake, where we stopped at a swimming spot.
Since this is a mountain lake, the water was already very cold in October. Nevertheless, I did not miss the chance to jump into the cold waves.
It felt good to swim in fresh water again. From the lake, I had a wonderful view of the breathtaking landscape.
After the refreshing swim, it was time for lunch. We docked at a restaurant located on a hill by the shore, from where we enjoyed a dreamy panoramic view over the lake.
The food was served buffet-style. I chose my beloved köfte with bulgur and, of course, as always, an oversized portion of salad – swimming in ice-cold water makes you especially hungry!
After lunch, we went back on board. Soon we stopped again for another swim, and of course, I was among those who did not miss the cold water.
After another boat tour, it was time to return to the hotel.
A wonderful day had come to an end again; I will never forget it and will certainly pay another visit to the Green Canyon someday.
